In the United States alone, 11,000 people suffer from severe spinal chord injuries. Many of these injuries lead to permanent disability, traumatic brain injury, and even death. Suffering from another’s negligence, spinal chord injuries affect all aspects of everyday life: family, employment, relationships, and lifelong happiness.

Spinal chord injuries usually result in permanent disability, paralysis, or the complete loss of movement below the impact point of the injury. Quadriplegia occurs when the spine is severely injured high up on the spine, near the shoulders or below the neck. Those whose injuries fall near the legs or hips will experience Paraplegia.

The human nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal chord, including the bundle of nerve fibers running up and down the spine. These nerve fibers carry detailed messages to and from the body’s powerhouse—the brain. An injury along the spine and these fibers is like putting up a roadblock. Messages can no longer pass to the regions below the point of injury.

   Types of Spinal Injuries:

  • Sudden blows to the spine may result in spinal dislocation, fracturing, crushing, or compression.
  • Sharp, sever impact to the spinal chord will cut directly into the nerves, severing these information pathways. These may be caused by knife wounds or gunshots.

Damage does not stop at the initial injury. Effects of the blow or puncture include inflammation, swelling, bleeding, or the accumulation of fluid around the spine. Neck and cervical injuries will inhibit movement in the upper limbs. Injuries to the lower back cause injuries to the bowels, bladder, and legs.

   Causes of Spinal Injuries:

  • Nearly 50 percent of severe spinal injuries are caused by automobile and motorcycle accidents.
  • Acts of violence, including gunshot wounds, cause nearly 11% of spinal injuries.
  • Falls cause around 24% of spinal chord accidents, particularly to those age 65 or older.
  • Athletic activities like sports and outdoor recreation cause over 9% of serious spinal injuries.
